Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I intern while in high school?

A. Homeschoolers and any others who are able to work in the Capitol for the legislative session (approximately Jan 5 - Mar 31) are welcome! We are happy to discuss living accommodations and other matters with parents.

Q. Can I earn college credit for a legislative internship?

A. Political science professors often offer directed studies or practicums such as a Political Involvement Practicum or Legislative Internship, in which you can receive credits for interning if you submit your hours and write a final essay. Some interns may even earn 12 credits and remain full-time students while taking no other classes during the Spring semester. If you do not see a relevant class already listed at your college, ask any political science professor if they would be willing to arrange it.

Q. How do I know who I'll be working with?

A. Whether or not you already have a legislator in mind, we will meet with you to discuss your possibilities and can help you connect with a state senator or representative to discuss possibly interning for them.

Q. Who will I be accountable to in a Statesmen Youth internship?

A. Statesmen Youth expects you to conduct yourself responsibly, attend any mentorship meetings and morning prayer when practicable, and align with our values and Statement of Faith. You will be accountable to your legislator for what you agree upon. You will also be classified as an Intern or Volunteer with the Legislative Services Office, which expects you to attend orientation and also specifies a code of conduct and dress code.

Q. How are stipends and housing determined?

A. Your stipend will cover some or all of room and board depending on need. You may be granted a donated room in a Christian home if you are comfortable with it, you may live at home or with a relative if already close to the Capitol, or you may rent a room or apartment yourself. Specifics will be discussed and agreed to in writing before the session begins.

Q. Must I own a vehicle?

A. A vehicle is generally necessary. However, it may be possible to arrange alternative transportation with your legislator or another intern.
